Hi Hilary!

Great Blog - I ran across it when I was looking for this Vintage Tech radio show on BBC 3.

Oddly enough, I am a new Ph.D. student at Royal Holloway this year!

Let's meet up for a drink and a chat when you have a chance!

Hi,
There is a huge interest in Australia in men and their sheds. There have been some popular books published on it. You will find through google I think.

The enthusiast is a species of museum audience which has been greatly discouraged and shunted to one side in recent years. The mere fact that our great technical museums have so much of thir collections hidden in inaccessible storage is symtomatic of how in the pursuit of non-collection based objectives a potential group of supporters are being alienated. Unfortunately such collections are tending to lapse into obscurity, and funding their wellbeing is not a high priority - which says a lot about how the establishment views them as opposed to arts collections. Next year marks the centenary of the Science Museum - but will it be marked by any celebrations of the richness and diversityof its collections, and what an unparalled resource they are for illumination many aspects of our modern culture and lifestyle? I wonder...

Thanks for setting up the blog, looks great. I've been really interested in Sheds for a while now too. I think there's room for some interesting reseach alright. Thay are one of the strongest expressions of vernacular architecture, they have such variability and strange mixture of epemerality and persistence, plus they give us insight into gender and other strcuturing elements in the use of domestic space. I'd love to hear more.

Hilary,
This looks really great! I'm friends with Klaus Dodds and Alasdair Pinkerton and they told me of your arrival. Would love to meet sometime and talk about common research interests!
